I've always romanticised the Old Curiosity Shop that Dickens portrayed and that my Mum had masterfully recreated in a paper tole that hung on our wall when I was small.  

Perhaps this is what has motivated a 24 hour craze that we're repeating for the 4th year in a row.  I see it as extending the Christmas cheer that I imagine rolling out into the streets as people stroll from shop to shop in the crisp night air.
